Fall 2011
The background of the picture above is the United Nations building. I sailed from Sorrento, across the gulf of Maine and down to New York last week with good buddies. It was amazing to see the city from the water. I got off downtown and spent a few days in the city running around seeing art and taking my neice Catalina to Coney Island! I am applying for the Arts and Humanities job at the Maine Arts Commission. I think it would be fantastic to help advance arts and education in Maine and with my background in education, drama, software design and studio art, I think I have a lot to offer. More on this later. Click any image to see a larger version. There have been a lot of changes in the last year. For those of you who have stood with me, and given me support, I have not words enough to express my gratitude. However, life does have a way of going on!onder and beauty can return in the dead of winter. Just when you think you're in for months of cold, monochromatic solitude - 'round midnight - suddenly, the color can return. It begins in your heart and seeps out through your fingers. I feel good paintings stirring in my studio.

The pastels continue to lead the way. But I'm polishing the glass top of my mixing stand and I expect nothing will keep a few oil paintings from popping out this week. Stop by later to see what has emerged. In terms of influences and inspirations - you must put Moscow Belgium on your netflix list. I'm thinking of beginning a top ten list of films that make you keep guessing all the way through - which way is it going to go - the lady or the tiger? The Picasso show is Seattle is really worth taking in - he was the heavyweight champ of the world for a big part of the 20th century. When you look at what passes for art today - you just have to laugh and wish Picasso was still kicking ass. His protean imagination makes Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst look like a couple of oscar myer weenies. OK enough talk. Back to the easel. I'm glad just to be back in the ring. Happy New Year to all of you!
I had a good Autumn this year, despite the economy - or perhaps to some degree, because of it! At any rate I want to thank the following galleries and venues for showing and selling my work:
Pearson Legacy Gallery in Deer Isle - Carolyn A. Hecker Chapter Two in Corea: Paintings and sculpture. Garry and Rosemary along with other terrific artists they represent in their beautiful gallery - located right across the street from Marsden Hartley's old studio! Works of Hand in Winter Harbor: Felt Creatures and Sculpture Local Color in Northeast Harbor, Meg Ashur The Neighborhood House in Northeast Harbor 7Arts Gallery located in the Maine Grind Building in Ellsworth. Open 10 to five Mon through Sat. I work in the shop on Wednesdays - so you can usually catch me there then. There is a good display of all my work including paintings, prints, and a selection of micropaintings, feltworks, mobiles, cards, and bookmarkos. Harlow Gallery - in Ellsworth - Leslie Harlow is exhibiting some of my larger oil paintings upstairs The Little Red Store in Bernard - I have been chosen by art and antiques dealer, Michele Marks to be here featured artist this summer. I am delighted to be showing my work in her rustic charming landmark in the picturesque MDI village of Bernard, which is just outside of Southwest Harbor. I will painting there on most Thursdays through the summer and into October. Thurston's Lobster Pound is just around the corner, as well as a number of other talented artists in the area.
Summer Workshop I will be teaching a plein air painting workshop this summer in August here in my home of Sorrento. The dates are the 10th, 11th, and 12th. There will be instruction, demonstrations, and individual attention for each student. Class will run from 10 to noon break for lunch and then continue from 1 to 5. The cost is $300. The class will be limited to five students. The Bird Ballet first major piece of sculpture "Bird Ballet" will be installed in Sorrento again for the summer. The clients who commissioned it were so excited when I first put it up, they began jumping up and down like kids at Christmas! The piece consists of nine bird shapes cut from 1/4" aluminum which rotate on stainless steel rods. Click here for more about "Bird Ballet.
Would you like to get together with some other artists once a month to talk shop? Get in touch if you are interested. |
